WHY WSS

Professional Wildlife Safety.

More Than Bear Guards

WSS was built around the realities of remote field operations. Our personnel are selected not only for wildlife safety capability, but for judgment, professionalism, communication, adaptability, and the ability to function as part of an operating crew. Whether supporting a drill program, environmental team, research project, survey crew, or remote camp, our goal is to provide personnel who contribute to the overall safety and effectiveness of the project—not simply stand watch for wildlife.

PROFESSIONAL BEAR GUARD SERVICES

For Remote Field Operations

Wilderness Safety Services provides professional bear guard services and wildlife safety support for crews working throughout Alaska. We support mining and mineral exploration, environmental consulting, scientific research, survey and mapping crews, utilities, infrastructure projects, remote construction, camps, and other field operations where personnel may be exposed to bears or other wildlife.

Effective bear safety involves much more than placing an armed individual beside a work crew. Wildlife risk changes constantly with terrain, visibility, season, food sources, human activity, work location, crew movement, and animal behavior. WSS personnel maintain active situational awareness, monitor surrounding areas for wildlife activity and sign, communicate developing concerns, document observations, and work with project personnel to reduce wildlife-related risk before an encounter becomes an incident.

Our bear guard personnel may support fixed worksites, drill pads, survey corridors, sampling locations, remote camps, transportation routes, equipment staging areas, and crews moving between field locations. Depending on the scope of the project, WSS can provide individual coverage, multiple-person teams, rotating shifts, or larger staffing plans for projects operating across several locations or around the clock.

The Wilderness Safety Guide Approach

WSS uses the term Wilderness Safety Guide, or WSG, because the role we provide is intentionally broader than the traditional concept of a bear guard.

A conventional bear guard assignment may be focused almost exclusively on watching for wildlife. Our WSG model is designed around the needs of modern field operations. Wildlife safety remains a primary responsibility, but our personnel are expected to understand the larger operating environment and function as useful members of the project team.

That can include maintaining communications, assisting with safe crew movement, observing changing site conditions, documenting wildlife activity, helping identify attractant or camp concerns, supporting established emergency procedures, providing general field awareness, and coordinating with supervisors and other personnel as conditions change.

The result is a person who provides dedicated wildlife protection while also contributing broader situational awareness and field support throughout the shift.

For clients, that means the position can deliver more operational value than a single-purpose bear guard role. Rather than paying for personnel whose usefulness begins and ends with the presence of a bear, WSS provides field professionals who remain engaged with the safety and function of the operation throughout the workday.

Proactive Wildlife Risk Management

Our approach emphasizes prevention whenever possible. Bear and wildlife encounters are often influenced by factors that can be recognized before an animal enters an active work area—fresh tracks or scat, repeated travel routes, food or waste attractants, limited visibility, changing crew locations, nearby habitat, or increasing wildlife activity.

WSS personnel document and communicate those observations so project leadership has better information about changing conditions. When wildlife is encountered, personnel respond according to the circumstances, established project procedures, applicable regulations, and the behavior of the animal.

Detailed reporting is also an important part of professional wildlife safety. Meaningful information includes location, time, species or sign observed, approximate distance, animal behavior, direction of travel, response taken, and the outcome of the encounter. This creates a usable record of wildlife activity rather than isolated anecdotal reports.

Scalable Bear Guard Staffing

No two projects require the same coverage. A small environmental crew working from one location may require a very different staffing model than a 24-hour exploration program operating multiple drill sites.

WSS evaluates factors such as project location, crew size, number of simultaneous work areas, shift schedules, terrain, visibility, transportation between sites, wildlife activity, camp configuration, and project duration when developing a staffing plan.

We can support short-duration assignments, seasonal projects, multi-week rotations, remote camps, and larger operations requiring multiple Wilderness Safety Guides per shift.

Alaska Field Experience. Professional Project Support.

Remote Alaska projects place personnel in environments where wildlife is only one of many variables. Weather, terrain, communications, transportation, isolation, changing work locations, and limited access to outside resources all affect how a field operation functions.

WSS is structured specifically to support those environments.

Our objective is simple: provide capable, professional personnel who help protect your crew from wildlife risk while becoming a useful part of the field operation itself.
